historyFairlawn School was one of 26 schools in Evansville when it came into being in 1955. When school started that year, it was a 15 room school with 329 kids in grades K-6. In 1959, Fairlawn became a K-8 school with additional rooms added.

The first principal, Mr. Donald Schaaf, served Fairlawn for 14 years until 1969.

In 1969, Mr. Ewing became principal of this great school. He, too, served Fairlawn students and families for 14 years until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Ewing is known and remembered for his ever present smile and a big trip he made to Hawaii. Fairlawn luas were big celebrations.

When Mr. Ewing retired in 1983, Mr. Kerney took over as principal. Mr. Kerney was here for 7 sensational years. Welcome to Fort Fairlawn and Turn On The Sunshine Machine were comments Mr. Kerney frequently made. Mr. Kerney wanted Fairlawn to be Disney on Parade – exciting inviting learning environments were evident in all classrooms.

Mr. Kerney retired in 1990 and Mrs. Rickard stepped in as the first female principal of this school. Mrs. Rickard led our school for 9 years and retired from Fairlawn in 1999.

Mr. DeWeese was our next principal, and he served Fairlawn for 4 years. Mr. DeWeese hasn’t been gone that long – many students here still remember him, and they still love him. Mr. DeWeese is fondly remembered for his easy-going, positive, can-do attitude.
